MacKay includes in his Cape Ann Series a
painting of Motif #1, once the studio of John M. Buckley, one
of MacKay's teachers, and a founding member of the Rockport
Art Association. Instead of the usual summertime frontal view,
he painted this great subject from the rear looking west at
twilight on a cold December evening. Stacked lobster pots line
the wharf, with dories pulled out of the icing harbor water,
as the sleeping town nestles under snow coated roofs. MacKay's
paintings are personal memories of special places and times.
