Built as a one story building around
1855, it housed a number of different businesses including
jewelry stores, general stores, and taverns, but mostly
taverns!
In 1909, Nick Schuh, the tavern owner at that time tried to
get a permit to add a second story to the building. Turned
down by the City of Cedarburg, probably for zoning reasons,
Schuh hired a crew and jacked the building up in the air,
putting the second floor under the first floor, and got away
with it!
Schuh continued to serve adult beverages while the building
was up on stilts, waiting for the completion of the first
floor. The City finally insisted on railings for the temporary
stairs since some descending patrons were descending too
rapidly!
The turn-of-the-Century tin ceiling installed by the tavern
owner is exceptionally elaborate with highly patterned
cornices and medallions.
